ASM2364 Product Overview

The ASM2364 is ASMedia’s second-generation PCI Express to USB 3.2 device controller, designed specifically for high-performance external storage applications. This chip provides a bandwidth channel of up to 20 Gbps between the PCI Express Gen3 x4 bus and the USB 3.2 Gen2x2 SuperSpeedPlus bus, serving as the core bridging component for building 20 Gbps portable solid-state drives (PSSDs) and external NVMe drive enclosures.

The ASM2364 features a highly integrated design, incorporating ASMedia’s in-house developed USB 3.2 Gen2x2 and PCI Express Gen3 PHYs. It supports various PCI Express form factors, including M.2, U.2 and CF Express, and enables plug-and-play operation of NVMe SSDs without the need for additional drivers. It is packaged in a 10×10 mm² QFN-88 (lead-free, green package), making it suitable for the design requirements of compact external storage devices.

ASM2364 Key Features and Technical Specifications

On the PCI Express side, the ASM2364 supports up to PCI Express Gen3 x4, is compatible with the PCIe M.2 Specification 1.0, supports Spread Spectrum Clock Control and link power management, whilst also providing a 100 MHz differential reference clock output.

On the USB side, it supports USB 3.2 Gen2 x2, is backwards compatible with USB 3.1, integrates two 10 Gbps USB PHYs, features built-in Type-C CC logic, and supports BOT and UAS protocols as well as USB hot-swapping and link power management.

In terms of NVMe functionality, the chip supports NVMe power management, the TRIM command set, error reporting and recovery mechanisms, and S.M.A.R.T. drive monitoring, and complies with the NVM Express Base Specification Revision 1.3c.

In terms of interfaces and control, it supports an SPI external ROM interface for custom RAM code, provides I²C, GPIO and UART interfaces, features a built-in 5V to 3.3V LDO, and requires only a local 25MHz crystal oscillator to operate.

The SilverStone MS12 M.2 NVMe external hard drive enclosure utilises the ASM2364 as its core bridge chip; combined with a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C interface, it achieves a theoretical maximum transfer rate of 20 Gbit/s (approximately 2.42 GB/s). High-end portable solid-state drives, such as the Western Digital WD_BLACK P50, also incorporate the ASM2364 bridge solution.
